When I petitioned the Dutch uncle of nature photographers for advice on my autumn foliage shots, his condemnation of my “stale dead leaves” set me in need of an ego analgesic, which I did not find in my time that night at the bar, where my efforts to establish myself as the exclusive object of wassailing were met with further boos.
