It was only when I asked whether the ticketed 'Nankeen porcelain' might not in fact be inferior late eighteenth-century Dutch Delftware that my local dealer suddenly became belligerent, taking the offensively retrograde step - in what until then had been a happy symbiosis - of showing me the door and saying that he hadn't earned his reputation by selling fairground gimcrack, not even to the likes of me.
