Snead was a competent botanist, but somewhat paranoid and prone to fits of dubitation: in his official capacity as Idaho's northeast regional agricultural inspector, he constantly worried that he would be censured for jobbery if he surreptitiously eyeballed some procumbent wildflower through his hand lens during working hours, rather than the solanaceous crop plants that were his appointed sphere.
