Just as I was wondering when sustenance would be served, the stew – a bright blue-green slime similar in hue to the verdigris covering the old copper pot that contained it – released a suffocating effluvium into the already polluted kitchen atmosphere and, moments later, exploded in a great salvo of popping and fizzing, whereupon I excused myself from Dr. Fowler's home and scored his name off my informal list of chemistry department colleagues whose dinner invitations I considered it safe to accept.
