Though passionate about lexicography, Dr. Phillips now spent his energy consumed in a sort of fumigation project -- a struggle to dispell what he took to be the miasma of ugly neologisms wafting from the remains of his beloved language, and so his dictionary itself took on an aged, anile quality: it could never be a go-to place for a modern writer seeking an apposite term to complete a quotation.
