As my man Humphreys took the old Rolls round another vertiginous bend of the Moyenne Corniche I leaned forward to enquire if he had remembered to prepare my favourite dish of sliced ham collops for supper, at which he regaled me by chortling over his shoulder 'oh, right, sir, so the dogsbody's the putative chef de cuisine now as well as chauffeur, gardener, and nurse, is he?' . . . which I understood to mean that, dependable as ever, he had indeed not failed me.
