Because Jack lacked all sense of the epigamic, he found himself in perpetually sejunct condition with respect to the opposite sex, this despite hundreds invested in personal ads in many reputable publications: indeed no matter how enthusiastically he promoted himself, windows hastily shut, curtains quickly fell, and jalousies closed their slats when poor Jack approached, leaving the fellow to search for a keyhole or a judas and whatever secret squinting satisfactions it might afford him.
