As they tore the insignia from his tunic – an affront to the Church, a blasphemous symbol – they shouted over and over for him to abjure, to renounce his beliefs, despite his protests, the rheum seeping from his eyes and nose, the outright sobs, and led him ad rem to a prison cell to await his execution at dawn.
