It was barely cogitable in the mind of a modern human, but I knew that this lunette of greenstone I held in my hands contained a numen, the spirit of the Maori deity Ruaumoko, god of earthquakes and volcanoes, a being so powerful that he could hector – or even eliminate -- my enemies, while protecting me as the possessor of the object.
