The residents at the town hall meeting were quite surprised when a member of the town council stepped to the podium and began to speak to them as a demagogue, rather than a neighbor and friend, as he harangued about a tiny endangered flower – which attracted botanists from far and wide because it was noctilucent during its short summer blooming season -- with slimsy reasoning about its worthlessness and the need to ablate the topsoil in the area where the plants grew in order to reach the precious minerals in the bedrock beneath them.
