Ferguson had been trying for months to get out of this godforsaken country and finally received assistance from the embassy for his scheme to order and ship military supplies, which he would accompany on the flight back to Scotland, but when he arrived at the air cargo office with his requisition papers in hand and heard the piper skirl a fey tune on the chanter,  he swore a vile oath under his breath as the realization hit home that this was a signal to the guards and that the helpful bureaucrat MacTavish was actually a quisling; thus, changing his prolonged quest for freedom into an untimely end.
