Gilbert was truly disturbed by the ceremony -- so reminiscent of a circus that he could imagine the emcee as a ringmaster, introducing the performing lions, tigers, and elephants in the three rings behind him, with a calliope playing in the background -- and he wondered how the Prime Minister had been beguiled into disinterring the body of their great leader, now martyred (and soon to be elevated to sainthood?), so that his remains could be placed in a newly constructed tomb, paid for with state monies approved by the Lord of the Fisc.
