Erdsmith, known to all as a usageaster, was quite precise during his telephone purchase of pet products and used only the simplest words while ordering new toys for his precious Mimi, so didn’t understand why his home was suddenly invaded by winged flying mammals, prompting a panicked call to his colleague Dr. Vlad Drac, DVM, the chiropterologist at the nearby university, to rid his home of the creatures; whereupon, the corps of grad students and research assistants who accompanied their mentor pointed out the professor’s repeated use of the spoonerism “bat call” when he meant to say “cat ball”.
