Having just declared his commitment to self-abnegation, imagining it as a catholicon that would cure his ills, Patterson spoke elegiacally about the pleasures and conveniences he would leave behind, but soon his wistful remembrance turned to silence: he renounced words themselves, and then motion too, now lying under the bar in a decorticate posture that alarmed his drinking buddies -- one of them a nurse who at first discerned the telltale signs of a stroke, but revised the diagnosis as Patterson whispered one final plea for beer.
