He had the rectitude to lead the legislative effort to protect the endangered vernal pool microcosm, but was reluctant to be praised for his actions, even with litotes such as “a not unsubstantial task” or “not bad, especially for a beginner”, so when asked to attend an awards ceremony, his bunbury – a grandmother who quite often was admitted to the hospital for a heart condition -- suddenly took ill and required his immediate attention.
