Benjamin realized that it must have been a quadrennium since he last set foot on the estate where he played as a child, and the roses covering the pergola looked as if they hadn’t been trimmed in all that time, but the master greeted him warmly and did not whinge about the devastating change of fortune that had befallen him; so, as a lagniappe to the elder man, the former gardener’s son vowed to return and revive the grounds just outside the parlor windows before spring.
