The souvenir shop in Baghdad had a big sign encouraging tourists to "pleez compère our prices" and it had the usual offering of T-shirts, coffee mugs and plastic-molded tchotchkes found in souvenir shops around the world but one little clay ziggurat caught my fancy, a miniature archetype of the pyramids of the Sumerian period built around 2500 BC.
