Nancy had wondered why a paltry keepsake like a scratched and tarnished locket could be such a precious bibelot for the little girl who had come under her care, but when she finally caught a glimpse of the tiny photo inside of a young woman whose big smile created a gelasin below her right cheekbone and whose philtrum ended at the cupid’s bow of a full upper lip, she could see from the resemblance that it must be the only surviving connection to her mother.
