When my fiancee won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry, she ignored my idea that these things are largely aleatory and, having convinced herself that she was the grand vates of our times, she had a large emblem of the award tattooed on her forehead, a gesture of cosmetic insanity which left me no choice but to leave her and which caused an endless brouhaha among our families and friends.
