The Edinburgh Poker Club’s maitre d', having just ushered the lackadaisical Mr. Bumbridge out of the main parlor and into the back room with the penny-ante games, turned to the staff and admonished, “be kind to the old bloke, for years, before they struck his pension, he was the king of wit, the master of badinage, his presence prized in the parlor, but apparently, tennis-elbow occasioned by tippling is not a disability”.
