He stood now at the podium, the master of levity, a lifetime achievement award in his hand, his prepared remarks, witty, acerbic, all his; until he saw her and the memories overwhelmed him: the frightened sook of a child he had been, his aseptic friendless years as a teen, and then her, his first love, his soaring heart–and her abiding faith in him, and, tears not quite restrained, he sidled from the podium and, seeing only her said "thank you" and left the stage.
