Quandary Resolution 5357
palpable, canary in a coal mine, ferrule, ochlophobia

Jiang Li’s fear was palpable as he made his way through the marketplace, and not because of ochlophobia; he was always wary in a crowd because his enemies could hide so easily, but the canary in a coal mine event that added to his fright was noting that the ferrule on his broadsword had broken, leaving him with no effective weaponry and only his considerable kung fu skills as protection.
