In his mind’s eye, Malroy saw himself lying on the morgue examining table with a toe tag on his foot and his bloody scalp a mimesis of a swage block pattern, a skosh distorted because of his caved-in skull and protruding brain matter; however, he was able to find and subdue the muscular blacksmith with relative ease, and they arrived at the jail booking area without the ruck of curious onlookers and reporters which usually greeted the arrival of a suspected murderer (and Malroy said quietly to himself, “so quiet, and no crows”).
