In the early spring, as the ground began to effloresce and bring back color to the earth, the tribe roused itself from its gray feral winter state, dressed in more festive attire, packed up its meager belongings, and with new-found aplomb, prepared to carry everything up into the high country, using only tumplines and the occasional walking stick.
