Having grown up poor and illiterate in a rural hamlet, where a cloudburst would flood the streets and leave them sticky with mud for weeks, and there was little to eat but offal from the nearby slaughterhouse and tannery, Joel felt that his middle age had been enriched by a chance to attend school, and he was excited to be an abecedarian -- and the biggest boy in kindergarten.
