Quandary Resolution 607
canonical, occult, doldrums, draconian
Becalmed for three weeks in the Doldrums and miserable under the draconian regulations now governing water usage, the crew of the Circe, most of them good Catholics at the beginning of the voyage, abandoned their canonical practices (prayer, fasting, and works of mercy) and began experimenting with mysticism and the occult, including but not limited to trying to summon the spirits of dead sailors, sacrificing four chickens and a goat, and persuading a dowser to look for the captain's hidden water barrel.
