His forearms and his temper rubbed raw by the asperity of the calcium carbonate surfaces, he decided to forego his characteristic noetic approach to problem-solving and trust instead to his gut feelings to show him a way out of this labyrinth of underground caves in which he had been deposited (through a sinkhole!) three days earlier in a way that was in humiliating accord with everything he knew perfectly well about karst topography.
