As I gazed out my bedroom window into the treetops, I thought I detected in the leafy canopy the lineaments of faces, all pinched and disapproving, a regular posse of Mrs. Grundys, which reminded me painfully of the inane and shortsighted impulse that had prompted me to prevaricate so shamelessly to Mother about my part in undoing the ties of her wraparound skirt in the parking lot of Suburban Square.
