Knowing the diva had spent her career singing the parts of goddesses, fans accepted the grandiosity of her memoir, but all was not copacetic in the opera world when one critic condemned the text as reading "more like theogony than autobiography," refusing to support her entrance into the Valhalla of Wagnerian sopranos, a club for which this critic imagined himself the plenipotentiary dean of admissions.
