Nothing short of a regular John Bull when he set out on the ambitious expedition to map out the NorthWestern Passage less than two years earlier, John Franklin, his ships now icebound, his crew evanescent from sickness and starvation, his body too weak to yomp into the gelid expanse of Hudson Bay in search of help, caught himself wondering about cannibalism.
