The Romans called the river Certisnassa, abandoning the Celtic Duabs, which they considered meaningless – or not Roman – and the Camp Trimontium, after the three mountains – which they probably considered a joke, as compared to mountains in Italy and, indeed elsewhere in Britannia, they were really just mounds, but when Christiane and Marcus took the two small boys to the top of the North Hill, with it's Signal Station, manned by eight Legionnaires at all times, and still having the fortifications of the Hill Fort of the Votadini, Tam and Boabie were gobsmacked: "Jeez!" said Tam, "is this Moont Ever-rest? ah kin see the hale of Sco'lan!" while Boabie simply said: "ah'm starvin!" and Christiane laughed at the wee boy's admission of sitomania, God only knew when they had last eaten: as they turned back to the path which would lead them down, she asked: "are you twins?" but Tam shook his head, "naw, ah'm eleeven mumfs aulder than him," so she asked when were they born: "mines wis 13th o December 1938 an he's's 15th o November 1939," said Tam, proudly, "an ah'm a better fechter," and swinging his arms in imaginary punches, shouted "bish! bash! bosh! oot fer the coont!" and Boabie scowled at the onomatopoeic blows; then Boabie asked: "wha's the Boss here?" and Christiane wondered how to explain what was a form of kyriarchy, with the majority of the British tribes in the occupied zone accepting and submitting to the control of the Roman army and it's appointed Governor; in truth, she supposed, most of them still worked on the land as they had done before, the only change being the nationality of their overlords – the same went for the many slaves in and around Trimontium and other bases and camps, they did as they were told by whoever did the telling; and she was suddenly hit by one of the mulligrubs which occasionally cast a shadow over what she admitted to herself was a very fortunate life which could have been so different, if she had not been found and rescued by Marcus, and them both not been rescued by that Scottish Major Smiles – and she remembered that she had his cigarette case and lighter, that would be her little treat tonight – after these two scallywags had been cleaned up and dressed appropriately for their station, for she was in no doubt that she and Marcus would become their adoptive parents!
