In April, a fatidic political column asserted that the diplomat, an armigerous social conservative, would see his bright career obfuscated by an ethics scandal, and indeed just two months later, an anonymous midinette stepped out of the Paris boutique where she worked, flagged down a tabloid reporter, and, in recounting her recent affair with the diplomat, took the first steps to worldwide celebrity.
