The moment of truth came during my defenestration through the new and pricey stormproof windows we'd just put in, as I was still making my descent, still hopeful, still naïve, and not yet landed on the hummock of my worldly possessions below: only then, as I was in midair, did I finally understand that my wife (apparently unmoved by the bread and circuses I offered as a diversion from our marital discord) was excluding me from her nidification plans.
